Follow a day at the festivals with same of the most artfully prepared sushi around. At 242 Cafe, chef Miki Izumisawa, who worked under sushi master Nob Matsuhisa in Las Vegas, turns out "fusion sushi" in decidedly untraditional presentations. The setting is distinctive, too. The sushi bar takes up most of the modest room, but a few tables offer a fine view across Pacific Coast Highway and down the coast .If you order off the menu, start with oyster with sea urchin and quail egg, or yellowtail with spicy miso sauce, which uses garlic, serrano chili and cilantro. Consider the omakase tasting menu: Peak experiences might include such picturesque specialty concoctions as the "Mount Everest,""lava to Flow to Green Hill" or "Moon & Sun" each of which incorporates several types of seafood and a veritable festival of ingredients. Miki's sushi dessert use a sweet wasabi sauce; perhaps finish with the refreshing Aloha Roll, which combines tuna ,avocado, macadamia nuts, mint and mango.
